Shri Gandhi Bal Niketan was established in the year 1959 by Shri Champalal Upadhyay, a leading and dedicated social worker of Churu district, who devoted his life primarily to women and child education, eradication of social evils, and upliftment of the underprivileged sections of society. With the vision of providing quality education to all, the Niketan was initially established as a special-medium Montessori school. Over time, in accordance with regional needs and public aspirations, Bal Niketan was upgraded to the Upper Primary level in 2000, Secondary level in 2004, and Senior Secondary level in 2013.
In the modern era, there was a strong need in the region for an English-medium school equipped with excellent infrastructure and qualified teachers. Keeping this in view, Bal Niketan conducted a public opinion survey before starting the English-medium school. This was the first time in the history of the educational landscape that a school adopted the method of public consultation for a policy decision. Based on the survey results and suggestions received from various stakeholders of society, Bal Niketan started English-medium classes from Nursery to Class 12 in the academic session 2015–16, alongside its well-established Hindi-medium school at Station Road.
Bal Niketan is equipped with a world-class sports complex featuring table tennis and badminton courts, an activity lab, state-of-the-art computer lab, science lab, music lab, and library. In addition, every classroom in all buildings is fitted with modern interactive boards. Under the Green Building concept, all buildings are equipped with high-quality facilities such as generators, RO plants, solar energy systems, and water recharge points.
At present, Bal Niketan has a total student strength of 2,000. After state government departments, it is the second largest employer in the region, with around 150 staff members serving in the institution.
श्री गांधी बाल निकेतन की स्थापना सन् 1959 में चूरू जिले के प्रमुख और समर्पित कार्यकर्ता श्री चम्पालाल उपाध्याय द्वारा की गई थी, जिन्होंने अपना जीवन मुख्य रूप से महिला और बाल शिक्षा, सामाजिक बुराइयों के उन्मूलन और समाज के वंचित वर्गों के उत्थान में समर्पित कर दिया। सभी को गुणवत्तापूर्ण शिक्षा प्रदान करने के दृष्टिकोण के साथ एक माध्यम विशेष मोंटेसरी विद्यालय के रूप में निकेतन की स्थापना की गई थी। समय के साथ क्षेत्र की मांग और लोगों की आकांक्षा के अनुसार बाल निकेतन को सन् 2000 में उच्च प्राथमिक, सन् 2004 में माध्यमिक और सन् 2013 में उच्च माध्यमिक स्तर पर क्रमोन्नत किया गया।
आधुनिक युग में बेहतरीन बुनियादी सुविधाओं और योग्य प्रशिक्षकों युक्त अंग्रेजी माध्यम विद्यालय की इस क्षेत्र में आवश्यकता थी। इसे देखते हुए बाल निकेतन ने अंग्रेजी माध्यम विद्यालय प्रारम्भ करने से पूर्व जनमत संग्रह भी करवाया। शिक्षा परिदृश्य के इतिहास में यह पहली बार था कि किसी विद्यालय ने नीतिगत निर्णय लेने के लिए जनमत संग्रह की पद्धति अपनाई। जनमत सर्वेक्षण के नतीजों और समाज के विभिन्न हितधारकों से प्राप्त सुझावों के आधार पर बाल निकेतन ने स्टेशन रोड़ पर अपने सुस्थापित हिन्दी माध्यम विद्यालय के साथ सत्र 2015-16 से अंग्रेजी माध्यम में भी कक्षा नर्सरी से 12 तक की कक्षाएं प्रारम्भ की।
बाल निकेतन में विश्व स्तरीय मापदंडों के अनुरूप टेबल - टेनिस एवं बैडमिंटन कोर्ट युक्त स्पोर्ट्स कॉम्प्लेक्स, एक्टिविटी लैब, अत्याधुनिक कम्प्यूटर लैब, साइंस लैब, म्यूजिक लैब तथा लाइब्रेरी के अतिरिक्त सभी भवनों के प्रत्येक कक्षा -कक्ष में अत्याधुनिक इंटरेक्टिव बोर्ड लगे हुए हैं। ग्रीन बिल्डिंग कॉन्सेप्ट के अन्तर्गत सभी भवन जनरेटर, आर.ओ. प्लांट, सोलर एवं वाटर रिचार्ज पॉईंट जैसी गुणवत्तापूर्ण सुविधाओं से युक्त हैं।
वर्तमान में बाल निकेतन में कुल 2000 विद्यार्थी अध्ययनरत हैं और यह संस्थान राज्य सरकार के विभागों के बाद क्षेत्र का दूसरा सबसे बड़ा नियोक्ता है, जहां लगभग 150 स्टाफ सदस्य सेवा दे रहे हैं।
